A message to the Writers’ Institute writing community

With great sadness we have to announce that the UW–Madison Division of Continuing Studies (DCS) writing program is being discontinued as part of broad changes to DCS in response to the financial downturn resulting from the pandemic.

In 2019, we celebrated our 30th Writers’ Institute conference. At the time we didn’t know it would be our last. Our 31st annual conference for 2020 was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the recent decision to discontinue the writing program means the end of our conference.

With your help, we were able to present 30 years of writing conferences to our writing community.

Many of you met friends and colleagues at past Writers’ Institutes. Many of you helped other writers publish their work. Many of you completed your manuscripts and published those manuscripts because of a connection or something you learned at a past Writers’ Institute.

All of you have enabled us to present the finest writing conference in the Midwest.

We will miss coordinating, planning, scheduling and greeting all of you at the conference. We will miss being cheerleaders, advocates, problem-solvers and friends. We will miss the pure energy of our writing community. We will miss you.

May you go out and write some more – keep writing forward always!

Laurie Scheer and Laura Kahl, your Writers’ Institute Team
