This class takes place on four separate days, offered in a participatory live-online format with brief prework.

The Manager's Role in Work Satisfaction and Engagement is open to anyone interested in the topic. It is also a required part of the Mid-Level Management Certificate (MLMC). Get more information on the MLMC.

There are many myths about what managers can and should do to support employee work performance, satisfaction and engagement. Learn what decades of real-world management experience reveal about best practices and tools for day-to-day manager activities, plus gain insights from recent research focusing on today's diverse and fast-moving environments.

Learning Objectives

  • Create a framework for better understanding the complex nature of work performance and dispel some of the myths about what works to impact performance.
  • Identify multiple strategies managers can take to increase work motivation, engagement and performance.
  • Explore tools for identifying different strategies for different individuals to build motivation.
  • Increase our self-awareness of our outward behaviors and our inward thoughts so that we can identify how we may be demotivating others and creating performance barriers.
  • Improve our ability to mediate team member conflict in order to preserve and strengthen team relationships as an approach to work motivation.
  • Understand the importance of trust-building and explore multiple methods for building interpersonal trust.

Laura Page

Laura V. Page (MS, UW-Madison; MS-J, Northwestern Univ.) is a highly experienced independent management consultant focusing on leadership and team development. She served UW-Madison as the area director for leadership and management programs for Continuing Studies, and was head of counseling for the Small Business Development Center. Page is a frequent seminar instructor, staff retreat planner, and public speaker.

Michelle Venturini

(MBA, UW-Whitewater, SPHR) has held HR leadership roles in the biotech, technology, and financial services industries. She is a pragmatic leader who can challenge assumptions and support managers in building their teams and their organization. Venturini's well developed coaching and management skills make her uniquely qualified to work with leaders at all levels to maximize their effectiveness.
