Summary

In these two, 2–hour online sessions you will leave with:
  • A solid grasp of what goes into advance care plans
  • A chance to watch a live mock Motivational Interviewing–based conversation about advance care planning
  • Plenty of practice time to get comfortable with these conversations
  • Practice using Ask-Offer-Ask to jumpstart your conversation
We will mix things up with lecture, group discussion, and practice in small groups -- because let's face it, the best way to learn is by doing! You will walk away feeling more confident about having these important (though sometimes tough) conversations with your clients.

Prerequisites:
  • Your experience with Motivational Interviewing (MI) is limited to a short workshop or self-study
  • You have general knowledge of MI fundamentals: OARS (open-ended questions, affirmations, reflections, and summaries) and the Spirit of MI
  • You want to improve your technical MI skills guiding a client towards change and growth around end–of–life decision and conversation
  • You approach conversations with curiosity, empathy and compassion

Overview

At the end of this workshop participants will be able to:
  • Explain the components of an advanced care plan
  • Apply Motivational Interviewing skills to end of life conversations through observation and practice
  • Demonstrate using Ask–Offer–Ask skills to jumpstart end of life conversations
Level
