Summary
In this high intermediate-level book club (B1/B2), participants will read, analyze, and discuss Frida Kahlo: una biografia by Maria Hesse, a contemporary Spanish illustrator and author, who seamlessly combines text and image to depict Frida's creative and turbulent life.
Over Six weeks, participants will explore the text through the lens of guiding questions: How do word and image meld to create a complete or incomplete picture of Frida? What does it mean to be an artist? What can we learn about Hesse through this biography? Improve your use of one of the world's most famous artists.
Course format:
Discussions will happen in weekly one-and-a-half-hour online sessions led by an experienced instructor and include a mix of small group discussions using Zoom breakout rooms and conversations with the entire class. The live online sessions begin one week after the scheduled course start date to allow time to work through the first unit of learning material in preparation for the live conversation practice.
Participants will read an average of 15 pages weekly and work through supplementary online course materials that will increase cultural knowledge and build advanced vocabulary and grammar skills. Book purchase is required. Reading guide and supplementary online materials included in the price.
Course materials become available online on the scheduled course start date and remain accessible for one month after the course ends.
Prerequisite: Spanish 5 or similar level. You should score well on this placement test or have taken previous high-intermediate courses to enroll.
The book may be purchased from other sources as well. Purchase the book. Please feel free to shop around.
