Motivational Interviewing (MI) sounds great on paper and sometimes those using MI struggle with when and how to use it for self-help or in practice. This workshop will teach strategies to help helpers bring MI to life in their work or individuals in their self-care work.
Materials have been updated to reflect new content in the recently released 4th edition of the Motivational Interviewing textbook, including the new MI spirit language. We will cover MI basic relational skills (spirit and micro skills — OARS (open-ended questions, affirmations, reflections, and summary statements) as well as dive into the MI technical skills (identifying, eliciting, and reinforcing change talk).
We will review MI tools that you can use in sessions and incorporate with other strategies you employ in your work for use by individuals to develop a path to personal change. We will leverage a combination of real play, role play, and demonstrations to take your best MI knowledge and apply it. This will be a highly interactive session — come prepared to think through your own personal path to change using MI strategies.
