Wisconsin Before Statehood: Indigenous Cultures, European Invaders, and Early American Settlers
Summary
This course provides an overview of the history of the place we now call Wisconsin — from its first habitation until 1848. Learn about the indigenous Hopewell, Effigy Mound, Mississippian, and Oneota cultures that preceded contemporary tribal nations, and how the French fur trade disrupted traditional life. Discover how lead mining brought thousands of white settlers into “Ouisconsin” for the first time, prompting the seizure of Indian homelands and creation of the state as we know it today. Students will receive a 100?page anthology of primary sources to complement class sessions.
Remote learning statement: Class will include pre-recorded lectures as well as live, online discussions with the instructor and other learners.
