Continuing Studies

Summary

In this advanced Spanish book club, participants will read the best-selling memoir Solito by Javier Zamora, which chronicles his harrowing journey from El Salvador to the United States as a 9-year-old boy. Together we will discuss his story in the context of the Salvadoran Civil War, (im)migration, and cultural differences between El Salvador, Guatemala, and Mexico. This beautifully written story delves into the universal themes of prejudice, belonging, friendship and family.

Book purchase required. All supplementary materials are provided.

Prerequisite: Spanish 6 or similar level. You should score well on this placement test or have taken previous advanced courses to enroll.

Course format

Discussions will happen in weekly one-and-a-half-hour live online sessions led by an experienced instructor and include a mix of small group discussions using Zoom breakout rooms and conversations with the entire class. The live online sessions begin one week after the scheduled course start date to allow time to work through the first unit of learning material in preparation for the live conversation practice.

Participants will read an average of 55 pages of the memoir weekly in addition to working through complementary online course materials that will increase cultural knowledge and build advanced vocabulary and grammar skills.

Course materials become available online on the scheduled course start date and remain accessible for one month after the course ends.

The book can be purchased on Amazon
