Professional Trainer's Certificate
Summary
Created for trainers and others who do workplace training, staff development, and adult education, this noncredit certificate program covers a range of concepts relevant to any workplace. Topics include: adult learning principles; organizational performance; needs assessment and analysis; curriculum design, development, and delivery; and training and teaching techniques. You are required to develop and facilitate a training program activity to complete the certificate.
Six full days of participatory learning, supplemented with pre-class readings, online resources, and assignments between sessions, plus a final project, provide you with the expertise to lead training, performance, and development initiatives at any organization.

About the program
The Professional Trainer’s Certificate is a six-day, noncredit certificate program (36 in-class hours) offered by the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Division of Continuing Studies. Created for trainers and others who do workplace training, staff development, and adult education, you will: apply adult learning principles to enhance employee and organizational performance; explore needs assessment; design and develop training activities/programs; deliver training using a variety of teaching techniques, and finally, present and facilitate a training activity and receive constructive feedback.
Program requirements
Upon successful completion of all requirements of the program – including pre-program survey, attendance and participation for all six days, pre- and post-tests, development and presentation of an applied project – participants will receive the Professional Trainer’s Certificate, verifying successful completion of the program with 3.6 CEUs.
About the Applied Project: Each participant is required to select and complete an applied project in order to complete and receive the Certificate. Project requirements will be covered at the beginning of the series. The key deliverable of this project is to develop and facilitate a training/educational activity during the final day of the series.
Program purpose
- To offer a professional development learning opportunity for people who work in, or aspire to work in, training, development, human resource development, adult learning, and/or continuing education
- To meet training, performance and development needs of organizations and their employees/customers/stakeholders through professional training programs
- Recognizing that training and development is a profession; as such, people who work or aspire to work in that profession need training and development to be successful
- The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that jobs for Training & Development Specialists and Training & Development Managers will grow by 7% by 2024; according to Spherion Staffing, 45% of organizations have recently invested more in their staff learning and development functions
- To address an already-identified market need that is not being currently met in this region by any similar such program
Audience
The program is for people who work – or aspire to work – in training, human resource development, adult learning, and/or continuing education. Relevant job titles may include:

Curriculum
Each day has a key focus/theme with learning outcomes/objectives. The program is based on core elements of adult learning theoretical foundations and proven practices. Each day will include practical application and a variety of teaching methods such as lecture, practical exercises, activities, case study, small group discussion, Q&A, quizzes, videos, and readings.
Learning environment
Face-to-face classroom is the main learning environment, supplemented with pre-class readings, online resources, assignments and assessments in between sessions, program pre- and post-tests, and electronic communications as needed.
Application
Prior to beginning the in-class sessions, registrants will be contacted via email and asked to submit a one- to two-page applicant essay, including statements of motivation, specific needs, current level of experience, and commitment to participate and complete all requirements. (More details about this will be included in a confirmation email sent to registered participants.)

With 25 years of experience as the president of Laurel and Associates, Ltd., she has designed and delivered hundreds of learning workshops, done technical curriculum design for various industries, and provided train-the-trainer seminars nationally and internationally.
ROBERT TOOMEY

ROBERT TOOMEY (EdD, Edgewood College; MA, Viterbo Univ) directs leadership and management programs including the Servant Leadership Certificate, Professional Trainer's Certificate, and a number of other programs. His experience includes previous service as training director in the public sector. The son of two teachers, Robert is a firm believer in education and lifelong learning.

MARY HODDY Mary Hoddy (MS, UW-Madison) is a master trainer for Global Learning Partners. In her former position as training director for the Wisconsin Union, Mary taught campus classes in communication, coaching, management, appreciative inquiry, and training plus facilitated numerous campus committees.
