Mental Health and the Older Adult Certificate Series

Mental Health and the Older Adult Certificate Series

— Changes to the Mental Health and the Older Adult Certificate Series —

The Mental Health and the Older Adult Certificate/MHOA curriculum is being redesigned in response to workforce challenges of providing care to older persons living with dementia. Starting fall of 2018, we will begin offering the Advanced Dementia Care Specialist Certificate. Unlike current dementia trainings, this certificate will provide an in-depth and advanced practice learning experience on mid-to-late stage care challenges.

Curriculum topics include but are not limited to: palliative and hospice care, pain management, managing chronic conditions, care coordination and transitions, behavioral changes, family conflict, spirituality and cultural needs, and anticipated grief and ambiguous loss. Expert faculty from UW-Madison and Middleton Veterans Hospital, along with regional experts, will provide training supported by clinical practice and evidence-based guidelines. More details will be announced here as they become available.

Students enrolled in the current MHOA certificate program must complete all required courses including the Summer Institute on Mental Disorders and the Older Adult, scheduled for July 26-27, 2018.
