Admission and Enrollment Process

Welcome to UW-Madison! Adult Career and Special Student Services is your access to admission and enrollment information for the Summer Science Research Internship program for students selected for inclusion by Madison Metropolitan School District (MMSD) or McFarland High School. Below are the steps you will need to follow in order to apply to the University of Wisconsin-Madison and enroll for the Summer Session.

This program is only for students preselected by the MMSD and McFarland school districts.  If you are an area high school junior or senior (grade in fall) interested in taking a summer class at UW-Madison, learn more about our Traditional Program for qualified high school students.  

Please contact your school district, MMSD or McFarland, regarding participation in this program.

Apply online by the deadline (May 1, 2017):

  • Complete the online UW-Madison Special student application

      Application tips:

      • You are applying to UW-Madison as a University Special student and should select High School student (UNHS) as your Special student type.
      • In the application statement, please indicate you are applying for the Summer Science Research Internship program. 
      • Respond to all items to avoid delays in processing your application.  

Submit to Adult Career and Special Student Services by the deadline:

  • The Parent/Guardian Consent form  completed and signed by your parent or guardian
  • A copy of your high school transcript (an unofficial copy is acceptable)

Complete the online orientation:

The Orientation and Introduction for High School students enrolled at UW-Madison is required before you can enroll. 

  1. View Orientation and Introduction (pdf)
  2. Complete quiz 
  3. Once you have completed the quiz, you will be cleared to enroll.

Enroll by the deadline:

Once your lab placement has been coordinated, the department in which you will be working will reserve a spot for you in their independent study course and give you a course enrollment number (5 digits).

For the following steps refer to the instructions included with your admission letter or view them in the Orientation and Introduction PowerPoint slides

  1. Activate your NetID
  2. Enroll via Student Center within your MyUW portal
  3. Confirm enrollment by returning to the Student Center—you should see the class listed there.

Important UW-Madison Special student dates (for Summer Science Intern program):

May 1, 2017 – Deadline to apply and submit the parent/guardian consent form and your transcript
June 2, 2017 – Deadline to enroll (without $50 late enrollment fee)
