The Midwest Review (formerly the Midwest Prairie Review) was established in 2013 to provide a venue for thoughtful and thought-provoking writing and visual art that examines, interprets, and redefines the wide spectrum of life, past and present, in the Midwestern heartland.
Our mission is to showcase the Midwest’s best and freshest short fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction, and art, as well as to celebrate the full spectrum of voices that emerge from, and are influenced by, this diverse place.
The Midwest Review is an annual literary and arts magazine published in Madison Wisconsin, featuring the Midwest in work by writers, photographers and artists who live in, or have lived in, the Midwest. We consider the Midwest as the region in the north central United States that includes the Great Lakes area and the upper Mississippi River valley (according to the U.S. Census Bureau, the Midwest is comprised of Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, Kansas, and Missouri). Of course, the Midwest is also a state of mind.
Submissions opened June 22 for our 4th issue, which will premiere at the UW Writers’ Institute in Madison, April 15-17, 2016. We are looking for thoughtful and thought-provoking writing and visual art that examines, interprets, and redefines the wide spectrum of life, past and present, in the Midwestern heartland. We are especially interested in new and emerging voices. We accept unsolicited submissions of original poetry, creative nonfiction, scripts, short stories, and visual art from June through September through our online submission system. We no longer accept mailed submissions or previously published work. Simultaneous submissions are okay; please notify us immediately if your work is accepted elsewhere.
Prose/Scripts: up to 5,000 words, double-spaced, Times New Roman or similar book typeface.
