Spend each morning at this commuter camp learning how to get the most out of your body and voice; focus each afternoon on scenic design, lighting and sound, and costume/makeup design. Cap your week with an open house and showcase where you’ll apply what you’ve learned in a final performance in front of family and friends.

About the camp
The UW-Madison Summer High School Theatre Camp is open to high school students interested in exploring all aspects of theatre. UW-Madison faculty and students teach all the sessions, which are held in Vilas Hall, the home of the university’s Department of Theatre & Drama. Camp enrollment is limited to a maximum of 60 students, with each class limited to a maximum of 20 students.
Participants are divided into 3 sections that work together in morning technique classes and afternoon technical theatre labs. Each day ends with a master class for those interested in performance or additional lab time for those interested in technical theatre.
About your camp directors
Sarah Marty is the director of theatre programs for UW-Madison Continuing Studies. In addition to coordinating the Wisconsin High School Theatre Festival, Wisconsin Theatre Auditions & Technical Interviews, and Wisconsin Wrights New Play Development, she also teaches and supervises Madison-area arts management and theatre courses for adult learners. Sarah is the producing Artistic Director for Four Seasons Theatre, Forward Theater, UW Varsity Band Spring Concert, and has worked with numerous organizations in Madison including Madison Opera and the Overture Center.
Jim Greco is the costume studio supervisor at UW-Madison’s University Theatre and teaches Fundamentals of Costume Technology (Stage Makeup and Sewing for the Theatre) and Costume Technology (Draping and Crafts). As a costume shop manager, he has worked for the Alabama Shakespeare Festival, Indianapolis Repertory Theatre, GeVa Theatre, and The Berkshire Theatre Festival. As a draper he has created costumes for the Utah Shakespearean Festival, The Alliance Theatre, Alabama Shakespeare Festival, Hartford Stage, Yale Repertory Theatre, Madison Repertory Theatre, American Players Theatre, and Shakespeare Theatre in Washington DC. Jim has worked with Tony-award winning designers Martin Pakledinaz, Catherine Zuber, and Ann Hould-Ward and has designed for the Florida Shakespeare Festival, Alabama Shakespeare Festival, Whoop De Doo, GeVa, and University of Alabama-Tuscaloosa.
Schedule and class descriptions
Sun, July 19, noon-5pm: Parent and student orientation and tour. After that parents and participants are invited to attend a matinee performance of the University Theatre’s summer production.
Mon, July 20-Fri, July 24, 9am-5pm:
AM technique classes: Acting, Theatre Games, Improvisation; Movement, Body Awareness; Vocal Production, Diction
PM labs: Scenic Design and Props; Lighting and Sound; Workshop Costume and Makeup
Late PM: Performer master class or additional lab time for tech students
Saturday, July 25, 10am-noon: Open house and showcase by camp participants
Registration for the UW-Madison Summer High School Theatre Camp is $350 (including a $50 nonrefundable processing fee). The participant fee includes all course instruction and materials. Students will bring their own lunch or money to purchase food at the nearby Fresh Market Grocery Store.
