The Public Works Supervisory Academy is a nine-class program that provides first- and second-line supervisors with the tools to be effective managers. Our knowledgeable and experienced instructors provide up-todate information, as well as opportunities to practice skills and to problem solve with other participants.
The nine classes that comprise the Public Works Supervisory academy are:
All classes are offered each calendar year. You can take classes in any order and you can enroll in individual sessions without enrolling in the entire Academy. Completion of the Academy fulfills 54 hours of the Wisconsin Certified Public Manager® Program. UW-Madison Continuing Studies offers the Academy in cooperation with the American Public Works Association Wisconsin Chapter.

Basic management skills
Explore the supervisor’s role in the
public works setting. Learn skills for
coaching, team building, setting
performance standards, and using
progressive discipline.
Instructor: Gregg Miller provides technical assistance, consultation, and training services to labor groups of various sizes as well as to employers and employees.

Fundamentals of
government/ethics
Consider how the powers and
structures of Wisconsin local governments
set the framework for local
services and their delivery. Learn how
cooperative arrangements between
local governments can be eneficial.
Review codes of conduct and professional
ethics codes through case studies.

His areas of expertise include municipal engineering, public works management and operations, traffic and parking engineering, and stormwater management and engineering.

of self assessments completed before
class, learn how your own style and
needs compare with other public
managers and with your agency goals.
Discover strategies to build on your
strengths and address limitations.
Register by Oct. 1 to complete self
assessments before class. We use class
time for analysis and discussion.

Nuts and bolts of
personnel management
Learn the basic personnel management
functions in government,
including the critical role of the unit
manager: to interview, select, train,
evaluate, retain and energize employees.
Learn special skills to manage
personnel during challenging times
and skills for addressing problems
such as absenteeism, substance abuse,
and harassment.
Instructor: William Strycker (MS, Indiana Univ.), a private consultant, has served in several leadership roles at Madison College and as a commissioner with the Wisconsin Employment Relations Commission.

Purchasing and
inventory control
Learn straightforward approaches to

Each class costs $155, which covers instruction, materials, and 0.6 (6 hours) of continuing education units. Individuals registering for two or more classes on the same registration form pay $120/class, a savings of $35/person.
8:30 am–3:30 pm; with a break for lunch on your own.
Municipalities/agencies that send two or more participants pay $120/person/class, a savings of $35/person.
APWA members working for a municipality are eligible for a 50% tuition reimbursement and non-members for a 25% reimbursement. For more information check out the APWA Web site.
Cancellation policy: If you are unable to attend or arrange for a substitute, you may obtain a refund minus the $20 administrative fee by contacting our registration department at least 3 business days prior to the program. If you cancel 3 business days or less before the program, or do not attend, you are responsible for the entire fee. To cancel or arrange for a substitute, please call 800-725-9692.
