Mediation Techniques for Managing Conflict : An Introductory Self-study Course

This convenient online course can be taken from anywhere. You can participate in our online classes from home, from your office, even when you travel.

Description:

You learn in this self-paced program how to not advocate for one side or another in a conflicted situation, but rather how to help yourself and others reach consensual agreement. The course examines the basic techniques of conflict management, negotiation, and mediation for use in the workplace, home, or other situations where disagreements may arise.

This web-based program is designed so you can work at your own pace to learn the basic steps in the mediation process. You study the content and then decide when to take the quizzes, all of which are included on the course web site.

Course objectives

Through this course you will understand:

  1. Your own response to conflict.
  2. The fundamentals of interest-based negotiations.
  3. The stages of the mediation process.
  4. Interventions the mediator uses to move parties to resolution.

Who this course is for:

This self-study course is for anyone interested in learning the basics of the mediation process. Human service and mental health professionals as well as public and private sector employees will find this course helpful for both their professional and private lives.

Donna Erez Navot is the Director of the Mediation Clinic at University of Wisconsin Law School. Before moving to Madison in 2009, she was employed as a mediator in the Child Permanency Mediation Program in the NYC Family Court, where she mediated issues surrounding placement of children in foster care, including relationships and communication between parties, custody/visitation/guardianship petitions, conditional surrenders and other issues. She is a graduate of Cardozo Law School in New York and after completing her undergraduate degree at Emory University, Donna studied Social Work at Tel Aviv University in Israel.

Thank you to Ann Milne, ACSW, who developed the first Mediation Techniques for Managing Conflicts course.  Ann was in the field of mediation from 1972 until her retirement in 2010.
