Honoring Our Common Differences: Creating Inclusive Organizations

In an inclusive organization, all people—including people of diverse social and cultural groups (gender, race, ethnicity, class, disability, sexual orientation)—experience uncompromising respect and dignity. Such organizations value and actively encourage multiple experiences and perspectives, creating a positive, collaborative environment where people can be themselves and contribute their best work.

Honoring Our Common Differences: Creating Inclusive Organizations

This workshop creates a safe forum for self-reflection and dialogue about inclusivity.

You will gain insights into:

  • how your life experiences and assumptions affect your understanding of, and actions toward, inclusivity.
  • how oppression operates on individual and institutional levels and how you may unintentionally exclude people.
  • your privileges and how to use them with integrity to enhance inclusivity.
  • differences between nondiscriminatory and inclusive behaviors at the personal and institutional level.

Your instructor

Kathy Germann has conducted workshops on a broad range of human relations issues since 1982. Her audiences have included educators, clergy, and professionals working in human services, health care, law enforcement and business. In addition to teaching on three college campuses she is a former director of a YWCA and manager of a training unit in a human services agency. As a member of a management team, she took a leadership role in an agency-wide multicultural organizational development process. Kathy currently operates her own consulting and training business specializing in diversity issues, conflict resolution, team-building and training design. "I took Kathy’s diversity workshops to fine-tune myself as an instrument for this work. Because of the depth of her commitment and her mastery of how people change and grow, the workshops have helped me do exactly that. A lot of my work has been with Indian elders. Borrowing from their vocabulary, I would say that Kathy has ‘medicine’.” ~ Rodney Horikawa, student services coordinator, Campus Community Partnership, UW–Madison

“Kathy’s strategy in introducing diversity issues into the workplace is par excellence.” Rev. David Couper, retired Madison Chief of Police, 1972-1993
