What you’ll experience
The Shaw Festival is a justifiably famous destination for great theatre, and the lineup of plays for 2013 is outstanding. With the option to choose from a selection of works by George Bernard Shaw and other playwrights this is an opportunity for a great weekend of first-rate theatre for you and your friends in a beautiful and welcoming location.
On Friday night you will attend an adaptation of the Shaw satire Peace In Our Time: A Comedy, on Saturday afternoon you’ll see the drama Faith Healer by Brian Friel (followed by a post-show discussion with the cast), and on Sunday night you’ll attend one of the most popular musicals of all time, Guys and Dolls. The other two plays on your itinerary are of your own choosing!
For your Saturday evening play you may select the romantic drama Enchanted April by Matthew Barber, or you may prefer to see the stylish comedy Our Betters by W. Somerset Maugham. For your Sunday matinee performance you get to choose between Oscar Wilde’s comedy Lady Windermere’s Fan, or the Shaw classic, Major Barbara. No matter which plays you decide upon you really can’t go wrong. Don’t worry about it now, though. Once you register for the trip we’ll ask you what you want to see.
And, as always, you may also attend the optional lunch-time play if you would like an extra dose of theatre. This season’s production is Trifles, two one-acts by Susan Glaspell and Eugene O’Neill, at 11:30 on Saturday morning.
Your weekend package also includes our popular educational seminar, a lunch shared with members of the Shaw’s Repertory Company and, new this year, a post-show discussion after the play Faith Healer! You get three nights lodging at the luxurious The Prince of Wales Hotel, and coach transfers to and from the airport with our traditional lunch stop at Niagara Falls on the way to the festival, so all you have to do this weekend is sign up, relax, and enjoy yourself!

Itinerary
Friday, September 6
- Fly to Buffalo, NY, and transfer by coach to Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario. Along the way you’ll stop for lunch and enjoy the awesome spectacle of Niagara Falls!
- Arrive and settle into your room at the elegant The Prince of Wales Hotel. The rest of the day is free for you to relax or explore the beautiful village of Niagara-on-the-Lake.
- Tonight the whole group will see Peace in Our Time: A Comedy, adapted from George Bernard Shaw’s Geneva.
Saturday, September 7
- This morning you join the group for coffee, muffins, and our popular educational seminar.
- At 11:30 you have the option of attending the Festival’s popular lunch-time play. This year’s production is Trifles, featuring one-acts by Susan Glaspell and Eugene O’Neill.
- For your matinee performance the whole group will attend Brian Friel’s compelling drama Faith Healer. After the play we’ll remain in the theater to meet with the cast for an educational post-show discussion!
- Conclude your day of theatre by choosing the drama Enchanted April, or the comedy Our Betters.
Sunday, September 8
- Your morning is unscheduled so you can discover the offerings of this delightful village on Lake Ontario at its most quiet time.
- Lunch with the Cast
- For your Sunday matinee performance you may choose between Shaw’s classic Major Barbara, or you may prefer to attend Oscar Wilde’s comedy Lady Windermere’s Fan.
- For your final performance of the festival the whole group enjoys one of the most popular musicals in American theatre, Guys and Dolls.

Your Guide
Doug Whittle is the UW-Madison Director of Educational Travel. He served for two years as a Peace Corps volunteer in Zaire and has traveled independently in Asia, Africa, Europe and throughout Central and North America. In the past 9 years he has led over 50 trips for UW-Madison, spanning five continents.
