Les Howles (MS, University of Oregon) is Director of the DEPD certificate programs and the Annual Conference on Distance Teaching & Learning at UW-Madison Continuing Studies. Les has over 25 years’ experience as a leader and consultant in the fields of educational technology, distance learning, eLearning, and work-force training. He has worked in corporate, government, medical, and academic settings to lead the development of dozens of courses and instructional products. Les has been a frequent presenter at national and regional conferences as well as a guest speaker at numerous colleges and universities.

Kat Abbott (BA, Penn State University) supports the Distance Education Program Development (DEPD) team with their online certificate courses and their annual Distance Teaching & Learning Conference. She has a BA in film/video from Pennsylvania State University.

Mike Kern (MS, UW-Madison) is an instructional designer for UW-Madison Continuing Studies where he develops online courses in a variety of formats. Mike specializes in using adult learning principles to produce innovative training through scriptwriting, instructional design, video and multimedia production. He is a former web and interactive media specialist for public broadcasting where he led the development of the first interactive digital TV programs used in public school classrooms. Before joining Continuing Studies, Mike worked at American Family Insurance, Wisconsin Educational Communications Board, Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction and The Training Studio. He has an MS in Educational Technology from UW-Madison.

Kimary Peterson (BA, UW-Eau Claire) is the Conference Manager for the Annual Conference on Distance Teaching & Learning. She works as a team member and oversees marketing for Distance Education Professional Development (DEPD) programs. Kimary has worked as Student Activities Advisor at both Madison Area Technical College and University of Wisconsin-Stout where she taught students about planning, logistics, and other managing skills. She has a BA in Organizational Communication from UW-Eau Claire.

Bridget Powell (OMDE, University of Maryland University College) is the Program Manager and Online Instructor for DEPD certificate programs and courses at UW-Madison Continuing Studies. She is responsible for designing the curriculum, teaching, and evaluating online courses. Bridget retired from the U.S. Air Force on Dec 1, 2013 and spent the last twelve years of her career developing, managing, and teaching a blended-learning joint professional military education course. She also holds a Masters in National Security Studies from California State University San Bernardino and has completed all coursework toward an EdD in Distance Education from Regent University.

Bonnie Schmidt (BS, UW-Madison) is Program Associate at DEPD and manages administrative and program support for all DEPD certificates and events. Bonnie has worked in a variety of human-service and educational organizations, including Safe Communities, Wisconsin Intergenerational Network, Coalition of Wisconsin Aging Groups, UW-Madison Center for Action on the Family, and the Mental Health Center of Dane County. Bonnie knows DEPD programs not only as a member of the staff but also as a student: She earned the DEPD Certificate in Fundamentals of Online Instruction. She has a BS in Child and Family Studies from UW-Madison’s School of Human Ecology and a Fully Prepared to Lead Certificate from UW-Madison Office of Human Resource Development.

Janet Staker Woerner (PhD) Janet Staker Woerner is a faculty associate for DEPD certificate programs and courses at UW-Madison Continuing Studies. She is responsible for designing curriculum, teaching, and assessment. Prior to joining UW-Madison, Janet was an associate professor and system department chair in a higher education university as well as a practitioner in business. She has taught in the online environment since 2004 and holds a Ph.D in Education with an emphasis on technology from Walden University’s Richard W. Riley School of Education, master’s degree in marketing from the Illinois Institute of Technology Stuart School of Business with an emphasis in the digital environment. In addition she is a certified peer reviewer for Quality Matters. Her current research stream is social media and the connection to social capital in higher education.
