Thank you to everyone who joined us for the 25th annual Writers' Institute. We are already looking forward to 2015. All information below is from the 2014 event, here for your reference.

There are a number of writing resources available during and coinciding with the conference

Below please find a description of these writers’ services. Take advantage of this opportunity to have your work read and critiqued by writing experts and be inspired at our annual success stories lunch.

Success stories/writers networking/genre lunch

Friday 12:35-1:50

You’ll have the opportunity to be seated at designated tables featuring your writing genre, i.e. there will be tables for Romance, Mystery, Literary fiction, memoir, nonfiction, etc. There you can network with other writers writing in your genre. Additionally, Writers’ Institute director Laurie Scheer will celebrate the writers who have had success stories in the past year. Please note: There is a separate fee for this luncheon. There will be seating available at the side of the room, however food brought in from the outside is not allowed in the conference room.

One-on-one pitch sessions with agents

The Writers' Institute offers you direct access to accomplished literary agents who are looking for both fiction and non-fiction related materials. You have the opportunity to pitch your ideas to these agents via 8 minute pitch sessions. You may sign up for 2 sessions before February 28th, 2014. (After February 28th, if space is available, you may sign up for additional pitch sessions—no limit). See the pitch sessions page» for details.

Practice pitch sessions

General practice pitch session (Thursday night only) This year we have a terrific opportunity for you to practice your pitches in a FREE (yes, free) practice pitch session that will take place on the eve of the conference, Thursday April 3rd, 2014 at 5:30. Then at 6:30 that evening we feature a great panel of leading experts who will address The Lure of the Logline. These sessions are open to combo attendees only.

Personal practice pitch sessions (Friday through Saturday afternoon) You may also practice your pitch through practice pitch sessions. These sessions allow for 15 minutes of one-on-one meeting time with our industry experts Jeff Kurz and Ken Miyamoto. Deliver your pitch, receive feedback, continue to perfect your pitch, and then see your agent and/or editor and provide a stellar pitch.

Critique services

  • Written and submitted in advance

  • Advanced manuscript critique with instructors at the conference

Q & A sessions with agents and our editor

Spend an hour with an agent discussing various topics in the publishing industry. These 1 hour casual sessions are free, however space is limited. Sign up when you register.

Exclusive fireside chats

New This Year! We are offering hour-long sessions with 5 of our guest instructors. These sessions will be limited to fewer than 10 attendees. The fee is $25 before March 14th, $35 after March 14th. Sign up to be part of a magical experience as each of these talented professionals take the time to speak with you to answer your questions and share their writing secrets – as you are all gathered around a toasty fireplace. One-on-one meetings with instructors

If you would like one of our instructors to provide you with feedback concerning an aspect of writing, i.e. craft, publishing, marketing, the industry, trends, etc., you may schedule a time to meet with them for a 30 minute one-on-one session during the conference. The fee is $60 by March 14, $70 after March 14.

When choosing your instructor, think about their expertise and the kind of feedback you’re looking for. The areas of expertise vary from instructor to instructor. For details, please see the meet with instructors page»
