The Civil War and Emancipation in the American Midwest

This class examines the destruction of chattel slavery in the United States from the vantage point of actors who hailed from the present-day American Midwest, or what was then known as the "Old Northwest," or broader still, "the West." What role did the Midwest's people and places have in toppling the Confederacy? How might their stories help us better understand the Civil War and its legacies anew?
